Linking Rice and Main - and the rest of the world - with enhanced telephone service

Voice over IIT or VoIIT (pronounced ‘vee oh eye eye tee’) is a telephone service linking the Rice and Main Campuses with enhanced telephone services, features and functions.

The service brings you video phone capabilities, the ability to listen to your voice mail by clicking on a message in your email queue, and the ability to organize an audio conference.  Desk-top sharing and audio conference features will be added soon. 

Subscribe today! Contact Aditya Jayanty to get your extension number. Then download the User's Manual and the Extensions Directory and begin to enjoy VoIIT's services.

VoIIT basic call functions

  • Dial other VoIIT subscribers using 4-digit dialing. 
    • Use the Extensions Directory to learn the Extension of your friends and colleagues
    • Use the presence service to see who is online.
  • Dial in to VoIIT from a regular telephone using the phone number 630-682-6093.
    • You will reach an auto-attendant recording and it will ask you to enter your party’s Extension number. 
    • Just enter the 4-digit Extension of the person you want to reach.
  • Dial out from the VoIIT network to your friends and family by dialing 9 and then their 10 digit telephone number.  Sorry, but we only provide local (in LATA) telephone service at this time.
  • Use the conference room, 2000, at 3424 S. State to have a video call with your instructor at Rice Campus. Contact Aditya Jayanty for more information.

VoIIT Enhanced Services

  • Secure your voice and video communications using the Zfone software application. For secure VoIIT service, follow the instruction in the Installation and User Manual.
  • Place a video call.  You will need to have a web cam installed.  Contact Aditya Jayanty or Don Monte for support.
  • Receive your voice mail via email.  When someone leaves you a voice mail message, you will automatically receive an email with a WAV file attached.  Double click on the WAV file to hear your voice mail. Contact Aditya Jayanty or Don Monte for support.
  • Create an audio conference call.  A conference service is already in place.  Contact Aditya Jayanty for a conference ID and simple instructions.

VoIIT Phone Choices

The following hard phones have been tested with our VoIIT service. If you do not require video the phones below are recommended: Cisco 7960, Cisco 7940, Nokia E61i, Nokia E71, SNOM.


VoIIT Test Bed

VoIIT is a production system. It is currently integrated with the Salare Security system whose original patent application grew out of a VoIP lab project. Many VoIP applications and features are under test and development in the lab. Our goal is to integrate all of these with the VoIIT production system. To ensure smooth integration we have built a parallel system - the VoIIT Test Bed. Integration of new features and functions is done first on the Test Bed. After they are tested there they will be integrated onto the production system.
