| October 27-29 , 2009: Fifth Annual VoIP Conference and Expo
The VoIP Conference and Expo at IIT's Rice Campus, home of the IIT VoIP Research Lab, continued its tradition of bringing together technical professionals, industry leaders and members of the academic and research communities in an intense three-tracked meeting at which the characteristics, advantages and challenges of differing technologies, architectures and solutions were presented, debated and discussed.
Participants included developers and professionals from telecommunications carriers, start-ups , NGN service providers, emergency services professionals, vendors of everything from web-based solutions, IP PBXes, carrier grade solutions, and SIP Trunks. This year's conference was preceded by a day-long SIP Tutorial taught by two outstanding technology leaders, Henry Sinnreich and Alan Johnston, who introduced the basics of the SIP protocol, described challenges to the deployment of SIP systems, and outlined alternatives to SIP and VoIP architectures.
Below are some photos that highlight aspects of the conference.

| September 29 , 2009: VoIP Lab Projects and the Development of VoIP Standards
Recent and on-going VoIP Lab projects were discussed relative to the development of VoIP Standards. Lab Director, Carol Davids, described a set of projects undertaken by students, faculty and industry in the IIT VoIP Research Lab and related these projects to efforts to standardize and specify the VoIP applications and services . The talk focused on the state of standardization and specification of VoIP services today and indicates how university labs can and do play a significant role in developing such specifications. Examples of projects were given that highlight different types of guidelines and specifications that the labs can and do support.

| July 22nd , 2009: Science Chicago - Build your own phone company
On July 22, students from area high schools, middle and elementary schools spent the afternoon in the IIT VoIP Lab, installing and operating soft phones as part of IIT’s “School Bell” phone company. They got the “411” on what they need to do to install their own IP PBX’es at home or at school and to connect them to the School Bell system to create an Internet-based phone company. Some parents and teachers joined the fun, as Professor Carol Davids explained how a phone system works, starting with tin cans and string, moving to circuit switched networks and now evolving to telephone service over the Internet. This workshop was a part of the Science Chicago program, an initiative the introduces area students in grades K-12 to the joys of science and engineering.
For information about how to join the School Bell project at IIT, please contact Carol Davids.(davids@iit.edu,630.682.6024)

| April 7 , 2009: Authenticated Identities in VoIP Call Control - Opportunities and Challenges
A talk about the verification of identity in VoIP networks was presented by John Nix of InCharge Systems (ICS). The talk provided a detailed analysis of the benefits and challenges associated with the solution proposed in the IETF standard “Authenticated Identity Management in the Session Initiation Protocol” (RFC 4474). Commercial applications and the limitations of many current network deployments were emphasized. A lively discussion and a demonstration of the ICS solution in the VoIP Lab followed the presentation. The presentation slides and photos of the event are available below.

February 21, 2009: Engineers Week at IIT
VoIP Student volunteers created and operated a booth at Engineers Week again this year. Our booth invited the children to "get Voipanized." Children placed audio/video calls and then watched as others morphed their video images, turning them into strange creatures, adding silly hats, bizarre eye-glasses, and other disguises. Children received print copies of their morphed-selves as souvenirs.
Seeing yourself turned into a large green lizard may help you remember that the new capabilities we get with VoIP come with new vulnerabilities! [top]

| February 10, 2009: Unified Communications for the Mobile Enterprise
An audience of over 50 people attended this presentation by Nokia's Maureen Stillman as she explained the challenges and advantages of Unified Convergence (UC) and its impact on the rapid and global adoption of VoIP services by enterprises and institutions. She described how UC supports mobility and the adoption of VoIP technologies and suggested ways to address some of the security and management challenges posed by their adoption. Her talk, based on her own recent work with Fortune 500 enterprises, Ivy League Institutions and Big Ten universities resulted in a lively discussion and Q&A session. Slides from the presentation should be available here shortly.
